Queso Diego August Meeting Announcement

Side of Gruyère cheese

Join us at our August Meeting next Tuesday, August 20 at 6:30pm at AleSmith (9990 AleSmith Ct, San Diego, Ca 92126)!  We will be meeting in the MEZZANINE (upstairs).  Meeting logistics are at the bottom of this email.  Always bring a lawn chair to meetings, but in this case, leave your lawn chair in your car as we expect to be in the Mezzanine which does have seating.

MAIN PRESENTATION

Curt will be presenting on Alpine Cheeses: From Switzerland to Italy and Beyond!  Alpine Cheeses comprise a wide variety of styles that share an origin in the mountains of Central Europe.  We will discuss and sample several styles of those “mountain cheeses” from within and outside the region.  We will look at recipes for some of the classic styles and discuss what makes them unique.  As a special treat, we will sample a cheese imported from Switzerland by one of our club members!  In November, our meeting will be making and sharing FONDUE, so this meeting is ideal to get your Alpine Cheese inspiration!

EPIC CHEESE CONTEST

More details will be shared at the meeting, but here is a quick timeline:

  • NOW: If you plan to enter a cheese in the competition, please email president@quesodiego.org with your name and how many entries you plan to submit to the competition.  This initial headcount is needed for competition judging planning purposes.
  • SEPT 6: All entry forms are due from those who are entering a cheese in the competition.  This is the finalized list of entrants.
  • SEPT 17: Your cheese entry and $10 entry fee (by cash or check payable to Anvil of Hope) will be collected at our regular meeting on September 17.  Your cheese will be stored in AleSmith’s coldbox until judging.
  • SEPT 21/22: The judging will happen!  Sometime thereafter, the winner will be announced, and there may prizes for the overall winner and runners up!  Feedback regarding your cheese entry from the judges will be given back to entrants.  Peter will work with the winner on scheduling the making of the winning cheese recipe, which will be sometime this fall!

Proceeds from this are going to support Peter and Vicky’s charity, Anvil of Hope (https://anvilofhope.org/), with the vision of breaking the cycle of poverty to ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive.  In addition to the competition, if anyone wishes to contribute, you are welcome to bring your donation to our September 17 meeting.

FETA CHEESEMAKING CLASS

Coming September 14, make and take home your Feta cheese!  Information about the class and signing up is coming…

MEETING LOGISTICS

  • We’re meeting in the MEZZANINE area (walk in the main entrance, past the main bar and gift shop towards the Barrel Room.  Before the Barrel Room, use the stairs or elevator to go UPSTAIRS to the Mezzanine).  There is seating in the Mezzanine.
  • Upon arrival, please check-in at the check-in table
  • Please set up your potluck item (and we have labels and label stands, grab a sharpie and label what you bought)
  • Members are encouraged to bring homemade cheese or potluck item or beverage.  If alcohol, only homemade alcohol is allowed (NO COMMERICAL ALCOHOL).  Better yet, enjoy some of the tasty AleSmith beverages!
  • Potluck/socializing beginning at 6:30pm, and the meeting at 7:00pm

A quick note about bringing a LAWN CHAIR… We always need to bring a lawn chair if we meet in the Barrel Room.  But the Mezzanine does have seating, so no lawn chair is needed if we meet there.  HOWEVER, I would ask everyone to always bring a lawn chair… that way, if there is ever a last minute change with the Mezzanine, we won’t be stuck without chairs.  I don’t expect it, but never hurts to be prepared.  In this case, I will leave my lawn chair in my car, as we are expecting the Mezzanine, and there is seating there.

Queso Diego August Meeting Announcement

August 15th 2023 Queso Diego Meeting

AleSmith Brewery
9990 AleSmith Ct.
San Diego, CA 92126

We are excited that Moroccan chef and cookbook author, Kitty Morse, will be joining us for the August Meeting of Queso Diego at 6:30PM on August 15th in the Barrel Room at AleSmith Brewing Co. Kitty is a wonderful storyteller and the author of many cookbooks including “Mint Tea and Minarets”, a fascinating cookbook that combines autobiographical accounts of her upbringing in Morroco and traditional recipes from her childhood. She will discuss that book as well as her newest cookbook, “Bitter Sweet”, based upon the diary of her great grandfather recounting the impact of WWII in Alsace, France, and her great grandmother’s cookbook with Alsatian recipes from that era. She will also have both books available for sale and signing.

Members of the club will be cooking dishes from those cookbooks to accompany Kitty’s presentation and making cheese from those regions. If you would like to bring French or Moroccan food or cheese for the potluck, that would enrich the experience.

The potluck begins at 6:30 and meeting at 7:00. Please bring a dish to share. Homemade cheese and homemade brews are encouraged.

The Cross-Club picnic has been scheduled for August 19th. Details to be emailed.

Once again, It’s still early but board elections are in November, so if anyone is interested in serving on the board let us know and feel free to join the next board meeting on September 12th.

Please remember to bring a chair, looking forward to seeing you!

Queso Diego August Grilled Cheese Meeting

Queso Diego Monthly Meeting
Tuesday, August 17, 2021 – 6:30 PM
AleSmith Brewing Co.

The Grilled Cheese Meeting, Redux
Somehow, virtual grilled cheese just did not cut it, so it’s time to do this for real!

(Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, we will be unable to accommodate Zoom attendees this meeting.)

Please read this message in its entirety.

Alesmith Brewery is located just off of Miramar Rd. between I-805 and I-15.
9990 Alesmith Ct.
San Diego, CA 92126

The meeting is held in the Barrel Room
Enter through the doors at the end of the hall to the left of the bar.

There will be no formal meeting. We will setup and start with announcements at 6:30 PM. We will then proceed directly to the main event:

GRILLED CHEESE

Please bring your own folding chair. One with an attached side table is convenient if you have one.

Tables will be needed for cooking and serving.
If you are cooking and serving grilled cheese, please bring your own table.

If you are making grilled cheese, please prepare the components of your grilled cheese prior to the meeting so that only minimal assembly and cooking are required. You DO NOT need to make enough Grilled Cheese for everyone. Plan to cut grilled cheese sandwiches into bite sized pieces. Everyone will want to taste everything.

Also, please bring all of the items needed for the preparation and cooking of your offering , a skillet or griddle, utensils, spatulas, serving dishes, etc. Eating utensils, plates and napkins will be provided by the club.

Please bring a Propane Stove or share with someone else. Electrical connections are very limited and needed for AV equipment.

Stoves and skillets can be shared and used in shifts. If you have a dessert grilled cheese, consider asking someone making a savory sandwich to share their cooking station.

Please help with cleanup. This is a messy event and will require everyone to do their part in leaving the meeting space as we found it.

As always, ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES MUST BE HOMEMADE. Fantastic AleSmith beer will be available for purchase from the brewery.

Guests and new members are welcome but please plan to contribute something to the meal.
We request that everyone sign in at the desk as they enter the meeting.

Please wear a mask and maintain physical distance if you are unvaccinated.
All are encouraged to wear a mask except when eating or drinking to protect yourself and others.
We are fortunate to use a very large room with a partially open roof.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact us at officers@quesodiego.org

Queso Diego August Virtual Meeting Announcement

Join us on Tuesday, August 18th for a presentation by Claire Enemark, author/host of “Behind the Rind” podcast. Then, put on your trivia hat, as she will orchestrate some friendly, cheesy, team competition. Trivia is a great way to have fun and learn some fun facts (or perhaps myths) about cheese. Check out some of the episodes on http://behindtherind.com and maybe, just maybe you’ll have a leg up on some trivia 😊.

Social/sharing time 6:30-7pm – if you’ve made some cheese or found some cheese you really like, this would be a great time to share it with the group.
Presentation 7pm…..

The Zoom meeting link was sent out to the members email list.

Queso Diego August Meeting Announcement

Cheese fondue-01

This month we start preparing for our famous Fondue event in September. Carol Rutherford will provide an introduction to Fondue as well as recipes you many want to try. It’s not all cheese and bread. If you plan on participating in the Fondue event then this is not a meeting to miss.

This will be followed by a short presentation on food safety as it applies to Cheesemaking, given by Sabine Friedrich-Walter, a Certified Food Safety Manager. This is an important topic that I’m sure you’ll find interesting.

Lastly we’re starting our bi-monthly “Jenny’s Corner” Cheese Talk. Jenny Eastwood of SmallGoods will pick a cheese and give a 15 minute presentation on that cheese. The intent is to become more informed on what to look for in a particular cheese or type of cheese.

The meeting is on August 20th at AleSmith brewery. As is our custom, the social time and potluck will start at 6:30PM. You all have been awesome with the sampling of cheese and food to try and you are encouraged to bring something to share. At 7PM we’ll start our business portion and featured presentations.

Bring a chair and a friend.
